If there is a way to bridge the idea of belonging to a monolithic group and preserve one’s authenticity, I am in the search for it.

I was invited recently to be part of a Fluxus type group led by artist Tara Sabharwal titled “In BEtween” while working at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia. This project has led me to keep associating the history of maps for colonial purposes and occupation as well as power for subjugation. There are hidden vector drawings in these works that are testimony of human migration and the synergy that is left behind.

Many referential images have evolved into a series of abstractions from ephemeral experiences from collected photographs. Images come to me, and may seem fluid and eloquent enough, that I have to keep making them. They still represent an act of vented liberation as I am aiming to understand a subliminal form of limbic identity living in the US.

I am using geometry as a venue to structure chaos and social unrest or disparities. I am also integrating the idea of the vessel as a construct to restrain multiple images.

What I can tell the viewer is that I am comfortably in limbo, I am no longer a typical Mexican neither am I a true American. I am somewhere in between; I am an artist working on ideas that help me to interpret my surroundings and the purpose of art making. I like to include to re-visit historical images of power that subjugated pre-Columbian cultures, I like to re-claim ideas that re-present the simplicity of form and abstraction as a human expression instead of a Western vernacular dominance.
